Visit to Sizergh Castle, Cumbria.
September 1st, 2002

Sizergh has been the home of the Strickland family for more than 750 years. It is dominated by a Pele tower, built in the 14th century, which gives some indication of the turbulent history of those parts. The house was extensively altered and extended in the Tudor and Elizabethan times. The Stricklands were loyal to the Stuart cause and adhered to the "old faith". The estate, the house, contents and other lands were gifted to the National Trust in 1950
We all stopped off for lunch at the Blue Bell Inn at Haversham, en route for Sizergh

Arriving at Sizergh.

The approach to the Castle with the Pele tower.
We attended Benediction in the private chapel of the Castle which is situated at the near end of the building on the right.
-------
The doorway seen ahead is wide enough for a coach and horses to enter, disembark its passengers safe from inclement weather, and then exit by another door at the rear of the building.

The gardens to the side of the Castle.

The lake at the rear of the castle is stocked with many large fish. They seemed quite hungry, but we had no food to offer them, until Moira Wright came to the rescue with some jelly babies which she had with her - the fish seemed to approve !
